Ulta Ashok, also known as Polyalthia longifolia or False Ashoka, is a symmetrical pyramidal evergreen tree with willowy weeping pendulous branches and long narrow lanceolate leaves with undulate margins. It exhibits symmetrical pyramidal growth and is commonly planted due to its effectiveness in alleviating noise pollution.
Description
The Ulta Ashok, often confused with the traditional Ashoka tree (Saraca asoca), is distinct in its appearance and characteristics. Unlike the Ashoka tree, which is known for its upright growth and bright flowers, the Ulta Ashok is characterized by its unique, inverted or ‘ulta’ growth pattern, where its branches and leaves tend to grow downwards. This gives the tree a weeping appearance, somewhat similar to a weeping willow, though the two are not related. The leaves of the Ulta Ashok are typically long, slender, and have a glossy green appearance. Flowers, if present, are less prominent than in the traditional Ashoka tree and are often hidden beneath the dense foliage. This tree is primarily valued for its distinctive aesthetic appeal and is commonly used in ornamental landscaping. The precise botanical identity of this tree can vary, as “Ulta Ashok” is more of a descriptive local name than a scientific one, and it might refer to different species in different regions.
