Description
The Bismarckia nobilis, commonly known as the Bismarck palm, is a large, solitary palm endemic to the savannas, grasslands, and other open habitats of western Madagascar. It is a striking and distinctive palm with a large, fan-shaped, silver-blue to green leaves and a straight, upright trunk. The plant is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are produced on separate individuals, and only female plants produce fruit. The female plants produce inflorescences of small creamy-white flowers, which mature into ovoid drupes, each containing a single seed. The Bismarck palm is best grown in evenly moist, well-draining soils in full sun to part shade and is tolerant of some light shade and clay soils as long as they are not overly wet. It is drought tolerant once established but benefits from regular moisture for faster growth. The plant is marginally hardy in Zone 9b and hardy in Zones 10-11, with mature plants reaching up to 70 feet tall in the wild and 30-40 feet tall in cultivation.
